Project Donations
Through this incredible gift from Almighty God, the hard work, integrity, and history of the Irish and German immigration of men and women who gave everything to the Church in gratitude, over 100 years ago will be preserved.
To have such an altar piece crafted, duplicated, or carved in such a way, all by human hands steadied by Faith, is an undertaking that our Parish simply could not afford.
It s a blessing to have your prayerful generosity and your financial support, in the preparation of this final and safe home for this Catholic legacy. The story of the immigration of our ancestors to these United States shall live on here, in this living marble masterpiece that now begins a new journey and life here with us. The history of our Catholic identity on the Jersey shore will be preserved, honored, and continue to live on for countless generations to come in our own house of worship.
History
Founded in the late 1800s, Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church became a true representation of our Catholic identity of Universal as it was a sight where German and Irish immigrants alike came together as Pennies of the Poor to use their craft and talents to glorify our Lord.
Holy Spirit Church is comprised of a towering Gothic-style brick sanctuary that holds dozens of statues, soaring stained glass windows, and hand-crafted marble altar and features. In early 2021, it was announced that Holy Spirit Church would be closing due to financial challenges and the lot and building were placed on the real-estate market for sale. This decision was preceded by the exhausting of many efforts and avenues in attempt to save the parish and was not one that was easy nor made lightly.
Divine Word Father Miguel Virella, pastor of Holy Spirit Church shared: “Holy Spirit Church is part of the legacy of this Catholic community in Asbury Park, and it holds a special place in the hearts of our parishioners.”
Preservation
Such structures and features so rich in beauty and history, nor an altar, should be disregarded or demolished.
With the assistance of many faithful supporters and parishioners, we have put forth efforts to assure that the marble from the interior of the Holy Spirit sanctuary is preserved. Each portion of the marble altar has been deconstructed – piece by piece – and preserved so that its beauty and history can live on and bring further glory to Almighty God.
