Our Motto
contemplata aliis tradere
“To hand down to others the fruits of contemplation”
The Dog With The Torch
The symbolism of the dog carrying the torch comes to us from the mother of St. Dominic, Blessed Juana of Aza. While she was pregnant with St. Dominic she had a dream that a dog leapt from her womb with a torch in its mouth, which she was told, “would set the world on fire.” For this reason, St. Dominic is often portrayed with a dog at his side and a torch in it's mouth.
The Cross With The Lillies
St. Dominic founded the Order of Preachers who preached the Crucified and Risen Jesus, throughout France, Europe and the world. Lillies, (fleur de lis) are often portrayed with St. Dominic to symbolize his heroic chastity.
The Bible And The Blessed Virgin Mary
"HAIL MARY, FULL OF GRACE, THE LORD IS WITH THEE, BLESSED ART THOU AMONG WOMEN." Lk 1. These are the words spoken to the Blessed Virgin Mary by God the Father and delivered to her by the Archangel Gabriel. They announce to us the Mysteries of the Most Holy Trinity, the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, the Perpetual Virginity of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, her Divine Motherhood, and the Salvation of Humanity. Thus, the Rosary becomes a most powerful Trinitarian Scriptural Prayer. For this reason, it is THE CHAPTER of Scripture placed directly by God, in the center of the 89 chapters of the four Gospels, and one of the greatest weapons of conversion entrusted to us by Our Blessed Mother. In a unique way our Patron, St. Dominic, has been chosen by Our Lord and Our Blessed Mother to preach and to give the devotion of the Rosary to the Church. There are countless stories told of how St Dominic preached the Rosary in France against the Albigensian heresy. At one point, St. Dominic became discouraged at the progress of his mission. No matter how much he worked, heresies remained. But he received a vision from Our Blessed Mother who showed him a wreath of roses, representing the Rosary. She told him to say the Rosary daily and to teach it to all who would listen and eventually the true Faith would win out.
The Star At The Top
Tradition relates, that a second extraordinary sign occurred at the baptism of St. Dominic. While the water was being poured on his head, his godmother saw a bright star shining on his forehead. For this reason, St. Dominic is depicted with a star on his head and is the Patron Saint of Astronomers.
